Le Rendez-vous du Directeur

Episode 16

What do Quincy Jones, Michel Legrand, and George Gershwin have in common? Like many other legendary names, they all studied under Nadia Boulanger.

For this sixteenth episode of Le RENDEZ-VOUS du Directeur, Jean-Philippe Bottin pays tribute to the career of Nadia Boulanger: a composer, conductor, and above all, a brilliant pedagogue. Born into a family of multi-generational musicians, she grew up surrounded by music : her father composed and played the piano, her mother was an opera singer, and her sister Lili was a composer.

Following the premature death of her younger sister, Nadia chose to stop composing and focus on teaching. She went on to direct the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau and taught in London at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as at the Juilliard School in New York.

As the first woman to conduct the world's greatest orchestras in Europe and America, Nadia Boulanger undoubtedly paved the way. Thanks to her, we now have the privilege of listening to orchestras led by Nathalie Stutzmann, Claire Gibault, Laëtitia Trouvé, Laurence Equilbey, and Françoise Lasserre with her ensemble Akadêmia, direction Françoise Lasserre, which is celebrating its final year after 40 years of magic.

Nadia Boulanger's work and talent, much like her teaching, will remain immortal.

Could a joke on TikTok and a French writer from 1906 have anything in common? Absolutely.

In this new episode of Le RENDEZ-VOUS du Directeur, Jean-Philippe Bottin starts from a sketch going viral on TikTok to introduce us to Félix Fénéon, a French writer and critic who, in the early twentieth century, wrote nearly 1,200 "Nouvelles en trois lignes" (News in Three Lines): entire news stories condensed into a single, brutally short sentence, with the punchline landing like a guillotine blade.

Playing with dryness, irony, and a rhetorical figure that strips out every coordinating word, Fénéon turns tragedy, scandal, and misfortune into miniature masterpieces of black humor. Beyond the melody of a viral video, this episode shows how artists throughout history have always turned constraint into art.

Have you ever binged a great crime series or devoured a good detective novel?

In this new episode of Le Rendez-Vous du Directeur, Jean-Philippe Bottin introduces us to the life of the founder of forensic science, the Frenchman Edmond Locard. Born in the 19th century, he studied law and then medicine to become a forensic pathologist.

A contemporary of Bertillon who pioneered the systematic collection of fingerprints and a student of Alexandre Lacassagne, the founding father of criminal anthropology, Locard left the world of criminology with his famous Locard's Exchange Principle: a criminal always leaves a trace on the victim, and vice versa.

As a pioneer in international police cooperation, it is in his honor that Interpol established its headquarters in Lyon, his hometown.

What about you? Are you more into crime series or detective novels?

Épisode 10

In June 2026, France experienced one of its most intense heatwaves on record, with temperatures soaring between 10°C and 18°C above seasonal norms.

In this new episode, Jean-Philippe Bottin explains the etymology of the words “canicule” and “désastre.” The Romans, keen observers of the starry sky, linked the dawn rising of the star Sirius, known at the time as canicula (little female dog), with the hottest days of summer.

“Désastre” comes from the Italian disastro: dis- meaning bad, and astro, from the Latin astrum (star). Literally meaning “bad star,” a disaster foretells a catastrophe, historically believed to be caused by a misalignment of the stars.

So, during this heatwave, remember to stay hydrated, keep cool, and look out for your most vulnerable loved ones.
